What's Happening?
Vertical Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights for the supernatural thriller 'The Whistler,' directed by Diego Velasco. The film stars Diane Guerrero and Juan Pablo Raba and follows a grieving couple confronting squatters on a Venezuelan
farm. The squatters claim to summon spirits, leading to the release of a malevolent entity based on the Venezuelan legend El Silbón. The film, shot in Colombia, is set for a limited theatrical release on April 17, followed by a video-on-demand release. It will premiere at the Fantaspoa film festival in Brazil on April 11. The deal was negotiated by Verve Talent and Literary Agency on behalf of Hideout Pictures.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of 'The Whistler' by Vertical Entertainment highlights the growing interest in international folklore and supernatural themes within the U.S. film market. By bringing a Venezuelan legend to North American audiences, the film could broaden cultural understanding and appreciation for diverse storytelling traditions. This move also reflects the increasing globalization of the film industry, where stories from different cultures are gaining traction in new markets. The film's release strategy, combining theatrical and digital platforms, aligns with current industry trends, maximizing audience reach and engagement.
