What's Happening?
Denison University is hosting a student photography exhibition titled '2026 Farmscape,' which explores various aspects of Ohio's food system. The exhibit features 40 photographs selected from 130 submissions by 13 students who spent a semester documenting
the American food system. The images capture diverse sites such as dairy farms, an Amish mill, a greenhouse operation, a produce distribution center, a meat processing facility, a coffee roastery, and Denison's own dining hall. The exhibition is curated by Nannette Maciejunes, an emeritus executive director of the Columbus Museum of Art, who emphasized the importance of image quality and thematic relevance in her selections.
Why It's Important?
The '2026 Farmscape' exhibit provides a unique educational opportunity for both the students involved and the public. By documenting Ohio's food system, the exhibition highlights the complexity and diversity of food production and distribution processes. This initiative not only enhances students' understanding of the food industry but also raises public awareness about the origins and pathways of food. Such educational projects can foster greater appreciation for local agriculture and encourage more informed consumer choices. Additionally, the exhibit underscores the role of photography as a powerful tool for storytelling and education.
What's Next?
The '2026 Farmscape' exhibition will be open to the public on May 2-3 at Denison University's Knapp Hall. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with the photographs and gain insights into Ohio's food system. The success of this exhibit could inspire similar projects in the future, potentially expanding to include more comprehensive studies of food systems in other regions. For the students, this experience may lead to further academic or professional pursuits in fields related to agriculture, sustainability, or visual arts.
