What's Happening?
In celebration of Black History Month and its centennial, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has released a curated list of 100 books by Black authors. The '100 Black Voices: Schomburg Centennial
Reading List' is available at New York Public Library branches, offering e-book and audiobook access. The list, curated by the Schomburg Center's reference division, features recommendations from prominent figures in Black history and literature. Notable authors include Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, and James Baldwin. The initiative aims to promote literacy and highlight the rich contributions of Black authors to literature and culture.
Why It's Important?
The release of this curated list underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating Black literary contributions, particularly during Black History Month. By providing access to these works, the Schomburg Center fosters a deeper understanding of Black history and culture, encouraging readers to explore diverse perspectives. The initiative also supports literacy and education, offering resources to communities that may face barriers to accessing literature. This effort aligns with broader movements to amplify marginalized voices and ensure that Black authors receive the recognition and readership they deserve.
