What's Happening?
ABB has secured a contract to supply gearless mill drive (GMD) and ring-geared mill drive (RMD) systems for the Eva Copper Mine Project in Queensland, Australia. Developed by Harmony, the mine is expected to produce around 60,000 tonnes per annum of copper
for at least 15 years. ABB's technology aims to enhance grinding efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility, aligning with modern concentrator designs. The contract highlights the growing demand for critical minerals and the resurgence of large-scale mining projects driven by the energy transition.
Why It's Important?
The contract with ABB underscores the importance of efficient and reliable technology in supporting large-scale mining operations. As global copper demand is projected to rise by 24% by 2035, the Eva Copper Mine Project plays a crucial role in strengthening the copper supply chain. ABB's systems are expected to ensure high availability and processing of copper ore, contributing to the global energy transition. The project also expands ABB's global deployment of GMDs and RMDs, supporting the supply of essential industrial materials.
What's Next?
ABB's engineering teams from Australia, Finland, and Switzerland will collaborate on the project, ensuring compliance with local standards and safety protocols. The installation of GMD and RMD systems is expected to enhance the mine's operational efficiency and support the copper supply chain. The project will incorporate an eHouse, designed and manufactured locally, streamlining engineering and reducing logistical challenges. ABB's involvement in the Eva Copper Mine Project may lead to further opportunities in the mining sector.
