What's Happening?
The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture is hosting a new exhibit titled 'Our Empire,' featuring the works of Redlands-based artists James McClung and Marcus Mercado. The exhibit, which runs until October 23, showcases 29 acrylic and mixed media
paintings and drawings that capture the industrial landscape of the Inland Empire. The artists focus on familiar yet often overlooked sites, such as the San Bernardino Santa Fe smokestack and the defunct Redlands Mall, to evoke memories and stories from the region. McClung and Mercado aim to highlight the transformation of these areas and the personal connections people have with them.
Why It's Important?
This exhibit is significant as it brings attention to the cultural and historical aspects of the Inland Empire, a region often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors. By focusing on industrial landmarks and everyday scenes, the artists provide a platform for local stories and memories, fostering a sense of community and identity. The exhibit also underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage in rapidly changing urban environments. It offers a unique perspective on how art can serve as a bridge between past and present, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own experiences and connections to the places they call home.
