What's Happening?
Zhou Guanyu, a Chinese racing driver, has joined the Cadillac team as a reserve driver for their debut Formula 1 season in 2026. Previously, Zhou served as a reserve driver for Ferrari and raced for the Alfa
Romeo-branded Sauber team from 2022 to 2024. In his new role, Zhou will support race drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, both returning to the grid after a year away from the sport. Cadillac, part of General Motors, plans to use Ferrari engines until their own F1 engine is ready in 2029. The team also includes former Indycar driver Colton Herta, who is currently racing in Formula 2.
Why It's Important?
Zhou Guanyu's move to Cadillac marks a significant step in his career and highlights the growing presence of Chinese drivers in Formula 1. Cadillac's entry into F1 represents a major development for the sport, as it expands the competition and introduces new dynamics with the involvement of a major American automotive brand. This move could influence the future of F1 by increasing its popularity in the U.S. and potentially attracting more American manufacturers to the sport. Zhou's role as a reserve driver is crucial for his development and could lead to future opportunities as a main driver.
