Rafael Ithier, the founder and musical director of the iconic salsa group El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, has passed away at the age of 99. Ithier, a pivotal figure in the salsa music scene, dedicated over six decades to shaping the sound and success of El Gran Combo, which became a leading salsa institution in Latin America and globally. Born in San Juan in 1926, Ithier's musical journey began at a young age, and despite financial hardships, he mastered several instruments, with the piano becoming his signature. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Ithier returned to music, eventually leading El Gran Combo to prominence.
