What's Happening?
Iván Arriagada, CEO of the Chile-based mining company Antofagasta, has been reappointed as the chairperson of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). This appointment is effective immediately
and will last for a two-year term. Arriagada previously held this position from 2022 to 2024, succeeding Tom Palmer, CEO of Newmont, who will retire at the end of the year. The ICMM, which is governed by a council of CEOs from its 26 member companies, aims to promote sustainable mining practices. Arriagada's previous tenure saw significant progress in industry performance and sustainability initiatives, including the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. His return is expected to bring continuity and further advancements in these areas.
Why It's Important?
Arriagada's reappointment is significant for the mining industry as it underscores a commitment to sustainable practices and responsible mining. The ICMM plays a crucial role in setting industry standards, and Arriagada's leadership is expected to continue driving initiatives that enhance environmental and social governance. This is particularly important as the mining sector faces increasing scrutiny over its environmental impact. The continuation of projects like the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI) under Arriagada's leadership could lead to more standardized and responsible mining practices globally, potentially influencing policy and operational standards across the industry.
