What's Happening?
Foxfield Preserve, located in Wilmot and operated by The Wilderness Center, is offering public guided tours to educate community members about conservation burial and natural end-of-life practices. Recognized by the Green Burial Council, Foxfield Preserve adheres
to natural burial methods that avoid the use of embalming chemicals and burial vaults, instead opting for natural or biodegradable materials. The preserve aims to allow individuals to return naturally to the earth while supporting long-term land conservation and environmental restoration efforts. Tours will begin with a 30-minute presentation at The Wilderness Center’s Interpretive Building, followed by a walking tour of the preserve. Scheduled tour dates include July 18, August 15, September 19, October 17, and November 21.
Why It's Important?
The initiative by Foxfield Preserve highlights a growing interest in environmentally sustainable burial practices. Conservation burials not only provide a natural way to return to the earth but also contribute to land conservation and environmental restoration. This approach aligns with increasing public awareness and concern about the environmental impact of traditional burial practices, which often involve chemicals and non-biodegradable materials. By offering these tours, Foxfield Preserve is educating the public and promoting a shift towards more sustainable end-of-life options, potentially influencing broader societal and cultural practices regarding death and burial.
What's Next?
As interest in conservation burial grows, it is likely that more burial grounds will adopt similar practices, potentially leading to changes in regulations and standards within the funeral industry. The tours at Foxfield Preserve may inspire other organizations to offer educational programs, further spreading awareness and acceptance of natural burial methods. Additionally, as more people become informed about these options, there could be an increase in demand for conservation burial sites, prompting further development and expansion of such facilities.
