What's Happening?
A trailer has been released for 'As Deep As the Grave', a western film featuring an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer. Kilmer, who passed away in April 2025, was originally cast in the film but did not shoot any scenes due to production delays. The creative
team collaborated with Sonantic, a UK-based company, to create an AI speaking voice using Kilmer's old recordings. The film, which aired its trailer at CinemaCon, showcases Kilmer's character, Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist, across various time periods. The project was supported by Kilmer's estate and his daughter, Mercedes, who provided archival material and collaborated on the visual deepfake. The film also stars Tom Felton, Abigail Breslin, and Abigail Lawrie.
Why It's Important?
The use of AI to recreate Val Kilmer's performance in 'As Deep As the Grave' highlights the growing trend of utilizing technology to extend the legacy of actors posthumously. This development raises questions about the ethical implications of using AI in film, particularly concerning consent and compensation. The film industry is increasingly exploring AI as a tool for storytelling, which could lead to new opportunities and challenges in how actors' likenesses are used. The involvement of Kilmer's estate and adherence to Sag-Aftra guidelines suggest a cautious approach to these technological advancements, balancing innovation with respect for the actor's legacy.
