Group14 has inaugurated a new factory in South Korea dedicated to producing silicon anode materials for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This facility, known as BAM-3, is capable of producing up to 2,000 metric tons of silicon battery materials annually,
which is sufficient for 10 gigawatt-hours of energy storage or approximately 100,000 long-range EVs. The factory was initially a joint venture with SK, a Korean battery manufacturer, but Group14 acquired full ownership after SK sold its stake. The silicon anode technology developed by Group14 promises to significantly enhance energy density and reduce charging times, addressing the durability issues that have historically plagued pure silicon anodes. The company has partnered with several firms, including Porsche's battery division, to integrate this technology into various applications.
