What's Happening?
Former La Liga referee Xavier Estrada Fernandez disclosed that he was barred from officiating Real Madrid matches for two years following his decision to send off Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. Fernandez recounted
receiving a call from the Head of the referees’ committee, Sánchez Arminio, shortly after the match, indicating displeasure with the incident and hinting at repercussions. Ronaldo, who played for Real Madrid from 2009 to 2018, is currently with Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr, where he has scored 11 goals in 13 matches this season. Al-Nassr leads the Saudi Pro League standings with 27 points after nine games.
Why It's Important?
This revelation highlights the potential influence and pressure exerted on referees in high-stakes football matches, raising questions about the integrity and independence of officiating in professional sports. The incident underscores the challenges referees face in maintaining impartiality amidst external pressures from influential clubs and officials.
