What's Happening?
Hofstra University has launched the First-Gen Den, a dedicated space for first-generation students to feel welcome and supported on campus. Created by the First-Gen Pride Committee, the Den is located in the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center and offers
a place for students to study, relax, and interact with faculty and staff. The space is designed to be a quiet, comfortable environment where students can work on assignments, charge devices, and engage in casual conversations. The First-Gen Den also hosts events such as study sessions and workshops, providing resources and support tailored to the needs of first-generation students.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the First-Gen Den addresses the unique challenges faced by first-generation college students, who often navigate higher education without the same familial support or understanding of academic processes as their peers. By providing a dedicated space and resources, Hofstra University aims to foster a sense of community and belonging among these students, potentially improving their academic success and retention rates. This initiative reflects a broader trend in higher education to support diverse student populations and promote inclusivity on campus.
What's Next?
The First-Gen Den will continue to develop its programming and outreach efforts to engage more first-generation students. The First-Gen Pride Committee plans to expand its initiatives, potentially influencing other universities to adopt similar support structures. The success of the Den could lead to increased awareness and resources for first-generation students, both at Hofstra and nationwide.
