Finnish smartphone manufacturer HMD has launched its new Vibe 2 5G model, featuring the Indus chatbot developed by Indian startup Sarvam. This integration was announced at the India AI summit in New Delhi. The Indus app, which supports 22 Indian languages
and can handle code-switching between languages like Hindi and English, is a key feature of the device. The Vibe 2 5G, priced at approximately $114, is equipped with a 6,000 mAh battery. Although HMD holds a small share of the Indian smartphone market, it leads in the feature phone segment with a 4% share. The Indus app has been downloaded 293,000 times, far behind ChatGPT's 43.9 million downloads. However, the strategy of incorporating AI that understands local languages on affordable devices is expected to succeed in India's diverse linguistic market.
