What's Happening?
The Rochester Historical Preservation Society is opening the Stevens Stone House to the public starting June 7. This historic site, built between 1832 and 1836, will host free open houses on the first Sunday of each month throughout the summer. Visitors
can tour the house, meet living historians, and view rotating displays of collections presented by local historians. The Stevens Stone House is notable for its connection to Abraham Lincoln, who was involved in a legal petition concerning property rights related to the house.
Why It's Important?
The initiative by the Rochester Historical Preservation Society aims to make local history accessible and engaging for community members. By opening the Stevens Stone House, the society provides an opportunity for residents to connect with their heritage and understand the broader social changes of 19th-century Illinois. This effort supports historic preservation and education, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for local history. It also highlights the importance of preserving sites with historical significance, which can offer insights into past legal and social challenges.
