What's Happening?
Nicki Hernandez, a former soccer star from Metea Valley, has signed a two-year contract with the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) expansion team, Boston Legacy. Hernandez, who previously played for Club
América in Mexico, is making her NWSL debut after a successful stint in Liga MX Femenil. Despite offers from other established NWSL teams, Hernandez chose Boston Legacy, influenced by the positive energy and constructive feedback from coach Filipa Patão. Hernandez, who has transitioned from forward to defender, has been a regular on the Mexican national team, contributing to their gold medal win at the 2023 Pan American Games and a historic victory over the United States at the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. Her move to the NWSL is part of her preparation for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.
Why It's Important?
Hernandez's move to the NWSL, considered the best women's soccer league globally, is significant for her career and the Boston Legacy team. Her experience and skills are expected to enhance the team's performance in its inaugural season. For Hernandez, playing in the NWSL offers the opportunity to compete against top-tier players, which is crucial for her development as a defender and her aspirations to participate in the World Cup. This move also highlights the growing opportunities and visibility for female athletes in professional soccer, encouraging more young women to pursue sports at a competitive level.
What's Next?
Hernandez will join the Boston Legacy for preseason training in Florida and Spain, with the NWSL season starting in March. Her participation in World Cup qualifying matches will be interspersed throughout the year. The Boston Legacy aims to build a competitive team around players like Hernandez, who bring international experience and ambition. Hernandez's family and supporters from Naperville are expected to follow her journey closely, with plans to attend her matches, especially when the Legacy plays against the Chicago Stars.
