What's Happening?
Trafigura, Entreprise Générale du Cobalt (EGC), and EVelution Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding to create a direct cobalt supply chain between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the United States. This initiative aims to meet a significant
portion of U.S. cobalt demand, particularly for the aerospace, defense, and electric vehicle industries, potentially addressing around 40% of national requirements. The agreement follows the December 2025 US-DRC critical minerals agreement, which seeks to enhance supply chain security. The companies plan to utilize the Lobito Atlantic Railway to reduce logistics costs and improve reliability. Additionally, technical training programs are planned to bolster Congolese capacity in cobalt refining. EGC will focus on responsible cobalt sourcing and traceability, aligning with international guidelines.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of a direct cobalt supply chain between the DRC and the U.S. is significant for several reasons. It supports U.S. goals to strengthen critical mineral supply chains, reindustrialize domestic manufacturing, and maintain strategic competitiveness. By securing a reliable source of cobalt, the U.S. can reduce its dependency on other countries for this critical mineral, which is essential for the production of batteries used in electric vehicles and other technologies. This initiative also represents a strategic partnership that could enhance economic development in the DRC through local refining capabilities and skills transfer. The collaboration aligns with international guidelines for responsible sourcing, which is crucial for ethical supply chain management.
What's Next?
The next steps involve finalizing detailed commercial agreements between the parties involved. Construction of EVelution Energy’s facility in Arizona is set to begin in early 2027, with completion expected towards the end of 2029. This facility will process materials into battery-grade cobalt sulfate and alloy-grade metal. The partnership also plans to explore potential equity participation by EGC in EVelution’s infrastructure. As the project progresses, it will be important to monitor the implementation of technical training programs and the development of local processing capabilities in the DRC. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for future collaborations in the critical minerals sector.
