Sora Fuel, a U.S. startup specializing in electrofuels, has secured $14.6 million in funding to advance its technology for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The funding round was led by Spero Ventures and Inspired Capital, with participation
from Engine Ventures and Wireframe Ventures. Sora Fuel's technology, developed in collaboration with the University of British Columbia, uses a liquid bicarbonate electrolyzer to capture carbon dioxide at a cost of less than $50 per ton, significantly lower than existing direct air capture (DAC) technologies. This innovation aims to produce SAF at less than $5.00 per gallon, offering a cost-effective alternative to conventional kerosene jet fuel. Despite President Trump's energy policies favoring traditional fossil fuels, electrofuels have gained traction, particularly in Texas, where projects like Project Roadrunner are supported by major airlines.
