India is advancing its semiconductor mission with the launch of Semicon 2.0, as announced by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw. This new phase will emphasize chip design, manufacturing equipment, and the broader
ecosystem necessary for chip production. The initiative follows the successful first phase, which saw the commencement of semiconductor production at approved facilities, including Micron and Kaynes. The upcoming phase aims to enhance India's capabilities beyond chip fabrication, focusing on the development of manufacturing equipment and the necessary chemicals and gases. The mission has already fostered a semiconductor startup ecosystem, with 40 startups receiving venture capital funding. Vaishnaw highlighted the rapid progress since the mission's inception in January 2022, noting the training of over 75,000 engineers in the sector.
