What's Happening?
Wyoming has established a business court, known as the chancery court, to expedite the resolution of business and trust cases. Created in 2019, the court resolves cases in an average of 116 days, significantly faster than the over a year it typically
takes in district courts. The court has seen a rise in cases, from six in 2022 to 48 in 2025, involving both local companies and those registered in Wyoming. The court's efficiency and Wyoming's favorable business laws, such as no corporate income tax and anonymous filing, are drawing companies to the state. Judge Ben Burningham, the court's first full-time judge, emphasizes the court's role in providing fair and quick resolutions, which is attracting more businesses to register in Wyoming.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of Wyoming's business court is significant as it positions the state as a competitive alternative to Delaware, traditionally the leading state for business registrations. The court's ability to resolve cases quickly is appealing to businesses, potentially leading to economic growth and increased business registrations in Wyoming. This development could shift the landscape of corporate domiciles in the U.S., as companies seek jurisdictions that offer efficient legal processes and favorable business conditions. The court's success may influence other states to adopt similar systems, impacting national business registration trends.
What's Next?
As Wyoming continues to attract businesses, the state may see further economic benefits and an increase in corporate registrations. Other states, like Nevada, are considering establishing their own chancery courts to compete for business registrations. The success of Wyoming's court could lead to more states adopting similar models, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape for corporate domiciles in the U.S. Additionally, the court's reputation for fair and quick resolutions may encourage more companies to consider Wyoming as a viable location for their business operations.
