What's Happening?
Australia Post is undergoing a significant transformation of its IT infrastructure, aiming to consolidate its operations into 13 'platform ecosystems'. This initiative is part of the Post26 strategy, which began in mid-2022, and seeks to modernize and simplify
the postal service's technology estate. Michael McNamara, Executive General Manager of Enterprise Services at Australia Post, explained that the goal is to streamline workflows and retire legacy applications by deepening the use of capabilities within these core platforms. The transformation has already reduced the number of systems from over 700 to about 400, with a target of 370 systems by the end of the strategy. This effort is supported by the Board and an independent third-party assessment, and it involves consolidating both tier one and tier two technology partners.
Why It's Important?
The transformation of Australia Post's IT infrastructure is crucial for enhancing operational efficiency and reducing complexity. By consolidating its systems into 13 platform ecosystems, Australia Post aims to improve service delivery and reduce costs associated with maintaining outdated technology. This move is expected to foster a more agile and responsive organization, capable of adapting to changing business needs and technological advancements. The reduction in the number of systems and partners also signifies a strategic shift towards more streamlined and efficient operations, which could serve as a model for other large organizations facing similar challenges.
What's Next?
As Australia Post continues its IT transformation, the focus will be on completing the consolidation of its tier two partners and further reducing the number of systems in use. The organization will also work on building trust with business units to identify and modernize 'shadow' IT systems that have emerged over time. This ongoing process will require strategic thinking and patience from the leadership team to navigate the complexities of large-scale technology transformations. The success of this initiative could lead to further innovations and improvements in service delivery for Australia Post.
