What's Happening?
The Diamond Council of America (DCA) has introduced the 'Second Spark' Workforce Initiative aimed at connecting veterans and parents returning to the workforce with careers in jewelry retail. This initiative is a response to the growing talent gap in the jewelry industry,
driven by retirements, an aging workforce, and increased competition for retail talent. The program seeks to provide individuals with strong transferable skills with accessible training and direct connections to career opportunities in the industry. DCA President and CEO Annie Doresca emphasized the dual purpose of the initiative: creating career opportunities for veterans and returning parents while strengthening the future workforce of the jewelry industry.
Why It's Important?
The 'Second Spark' initiative is significant as it addresses a critical labor shortage in the jewelry industry, which is facing challenges due to an aging workforce and increased competition for talent. By targeting veterans and returning parents, the program taps into a pool of highly capable individuals with valuable skills that can be transferred to the retail sector. This initiative not only provides these individuals with new career opportunities but also helps ensure the sustainability and growth of the jewelry industry by aligning employer needs with a skilled workforce. The program could serve as a model for other industries facing similar talent shortages.
