What's Happening?
HBO Max and A24 have renewed their Pay-1 window deal, ensuring that A24 films will continue to be available exclusively on HBO and HBO Max in the U.S. during the Pay-1 window. This window follows the theatrical
and pay video on demand (PVOD) releases. The renewal allows HBO Max subscribers to access a wide range of A24's films, which have proven popular on the platform. In 2025, half of A24's Pay-1 titles ranked among HBO Max's top 10 movies within their first two weeks of release. Nearly 70% of viewers who watched an A24 film on HBO Max returned to watch more, averaging four titles. Upcoming films in the deal include 'The Backrooms,' 'The Death of Robin Hood,' and 'Marty Supreme.'
Why It's Important?
The renewal of the Pay-1 deal between HBO Max and A24 is significant for both the streaming service and the indie film studio. For HBO Max, it strengthens its content library with critically acclaimed and popular indie films, attracting and retaining subscribers. For A24, the deal provides a platform to reach a broader audience, enhancing its brand visibility and potentially increasing revenue. This partnership highlights the growing importance of streaming platforms in the distribution of films, especially for indie studios that may not have the same reach as major Hollywood studios.
