What's Happening?
The SIL, a platform founded by Natalie Bloomingdale in 2017, is relaunching with a new focus on reselling vintage items. The platform will feature items from the closets of notable collaborators such as Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger, Kathy Hilton, and Diane von Furstenberg. Each collaborator's collection will be presented as a digital pop-up store, offering 10 to 20 pieces weekly. A portion of the sales will be donated to charities chosen by the participants. The relaunch, which includes input from Vogue editor Lilah Ramzi, is set to debut in February. The SIL has previously evolved from showcasing independent designers to focusing on vintage furs, and has collaborated with The Beverly Hills Hotel on a capsule collection. The popularity of vintage and secondhand
items, especially among Gen Z, is on the rise, with significant increases in related searches on platforms like Pinterest.
Why It's Important?
The relaunch of The SIL highlights the growing trend and demand for vintage and secondhand fashion, particularly among younger consumers. This shift reflects broader changes in consumer behavior towards sustainability and unique fashion choices. By incorporating charitable donations into its business model, The SIL not only appeals to socially conscious consumers but also sets a precedent for other fashion platforms. The involvement of high-profile collaborators and fashion editors adds credibility and visibility to the platform, potentially influencing industry trends and encouraging other brands to adopt similar models. This development could impact the fashion industry by increasing competition in the vintage resale market and promoting sustainable fashion practices.
