What's Happening?
Box Lake Lumber Products, a major manufacturer of cedar split rail fencing in North America, has been awarded a non-replaceable forest licence in the Kootenay region. This licence allows the company to harvest approximately 445 truckloads of logs annually
for five years. The wood will be sourced from unlogged areas and salvaged from regions affected by wildfires or pests. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the province to support value-added wood manufacturing companies, ensuring a stable supply of wood for production. The licence is expected to boost the local economy by providing logging contracts and supporting the value-added wood sector.
Why It's Important?
The awarding of the forest licence to Box Lake Lumber Products is significant for the local economy and the value-added wood manufacturing sector. By providing a consistent supply of wood, the licence helps secure jobs and supports the production of cedar fencing, which is used in various applications such as parks and farms. This move aligns with the province's strategy to strengthen the value-added wood sector, which is crucial for economic growth and sustainability. The initiative also highlights the importance of utilizing unlogged and salvaged wood, promoting responsible forest management practices.
