What's Happening?
Crowley has celebrated the first anniversary of its LNG carrier, American Energy, which is the first U.S.-flagged vessel dedicated to transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Puerto Rico. Since its initial delivery in March 2025, American Energy has transported
over 2 million cubic meters, equivalent to approximately 549 million gallons, of U.S.-sourced LNG to the island. This supply has been crucial in powering about 1.2 million homes annually, while also reducing carbon emissions by nearly 30% compared to diesel. Governor Jenniffer González-Colón of Puerto Rico commended Crowley for its contribution to the island's energy resilience and economic growth. The vessel has also supported the U.S. mariner workforce, employing 90 mariners, including cadets and apprentices, with a significant portion from Puerto Rico.
Why It's Important?
The operation of American Energy is significant for Puerto Rico's energy security and economic development. By providing a reliable supply of LNG, Crowley is helping to stabilize the island's energy infrastructure, which is vital for homes, businesses, and critical services. The reduction in carbon emissions aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources, contributing to environmental sustainability. Additionally, the employment opportunities created by the vessel support the local workforce, enhancing maritime career pathways and fostering economic growth. Crowley's longstanding commitment to Puerto Rico underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing energy resilience and supporting local economies.
What's Next?
Crowley is expected to continue its operations in Puerto Rico, further strengthening the island's energy infrastructure and workforce development. The ongoing partnership with global energy company Naturgy will ensure a steady supply of LNG to the EcoEléctrica power generation facility, supporting the island's energy needs. As the demand for cleaner energy sources grows, Crowley's role in delivering LNG may expand, potentially leading to increased investments in infrastructure and workforce training. Stakeholders, including local government and energy companies, are likely to continue supporting initiatives that enhance energy security and economic growth.
