What's Happening?
Kendra Woodland, a graduate of the University of New Brunswick, has made her professional debut in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) with the Ottawa Charge. Woodland replaced the starting goalie, Gwyneth Philips, during a game after Philips allowed
three goals on eight shots. Woodland's entry into the PWHL marks her as the latest U Sports alumna to join the league, joining a small group of former U Sports players. Her debut follows a successful collegiate career where she was recognized as the AUS Rookie of the Year and a U Sports All-Rookie. Woodland also represented Canada at the U-18 World Championships and was part of Canada's Universaide team.
Why It's Important?
Woodland's debut in the PWHL is significant as it highlights the growing presence and influence of U Sports alumni in professional women's hockey. Her transition from collegiate to professional play underscores the opportunities available for Canadian university athletes in the PWHL, a league that is gaining prominence in women's sports. Woodland's success could inspire other U Sports athletes to pursue professional careers, thereby strengthening the talent pool in the PWHL. Additionally, her presence in the league may encourage more Canadian universities to invest in women's hockey programs, recognizing the potential for their athletes to advance to professional levels.
