What's Happening?
Academy Sports + Outdoors has announced a new partnership with Hyrox, becoming the exclusive brick-and-mortar retailer for Hyrox fitness equipment in the U.S. This move is part of Academy's strategy to diversify its product mix and attract a broader customer
base. Hyrox, known for its combination of running and functional exercise, will have its branded fitness equipment available in over 70 Academy stores this spring. Additionally, Academy plans to introduce a Hyrox licensed shoe by Puma, although the specific locations for this product are yet to be confirmed. The retailer is also expanding its offerings with other brands, including Adidas Ultra soccer cleats and Havaianas flip-flops, to coincide with the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Why It's Important?
This partnership with Hyrox allows Academy Sports to tap into the growing fitness market, appealing to consumers interested in endurance and strength training. By diversifying its product offerings, Academy aims to attract higher-income consumers, which have become its fastest-growing customer cohort. This strategy not only helps mitigate risks associated with a narrow customer base but also positions Academy as a competitive player in the sports and outdoor retail space. The inclusion of popular brands like Adidas and Havaianas further enhances Academy's appeal to a diverse consumer demographic, potentially increasing its market share and revenue.
What's Next?
Academy Sports plans to continue expanding its product offerings and enhancing its in-store experience. The retailer is set to roll out RFID scanners across all stores to improve inventory management and customer service. Additionally, Academy is focusing on its rewards program, introducing new tiers to incentivize customer loyalty. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Academy's strategic product launches and partnerships are expected to drive increased foot traffic and sales, positioning the retailer for growth in the competitive sports retail market.
