What's Happening?
Allison Gasseling, a third-year animal sciences student at Washington State University, is using her platform as Miss Washington AgHERculture to advocate for women in agriculture. Coming from a family with a long history in farming, Gasseling has experienced
firsthand the challenges women face in the industry. Through the AgHERculture pageant program, she is working to educate communities about the importance of agriculture and the role women play in it. Gasseling's efforts include outreach and volunteering with local organizations to promote agriculture and inspire the next generation.
Why It's Important?
Gasseling's advocacy highlights the ongoing gender disparities in agriculture, an industry crucial to the U.S. economy. By promoting the involvement of women, she addresses a significant gap in representation and leadership within the sector. Her work also draws attention to the broader issue of declining farms and farmland, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and youth engagement to ensure the industry's future. Gasseling's efforts could inspire more women to pursue careers in agriculture, potentially leading to more inclusive and innovative approaches to farming.
