What's Happening?
Woodside Energy has awarded a contract worth over $300 million to Green Tug Towing (GTT) for the design and construction of four tugboats for its Louisiana liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. GTT, a joint venture between Harbor Docking & Towing and Saltchuk
Marine, will build the vessels at the C&C Marine and Repair shipyard in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. The tugboats, expected to be delivered by 2028, will support LNG tankers visiting the Louisiana LNG terminal under a 20-year arrangement. The contract is part of Woodside's commitment to investing in local suppliers and growing the shipbuilding industry in Louisiana.
Why It's Important?
This contract is a significant milestone for the Louisiana LNG project, highlighting Woodside's investment in local industry and infrastructure. The project is expected to create around 70 direct jobs, 30 related roles, and 60 temporary construction positions, boosting the local economy. The tugboats will feature advanced diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, reducing emissions and fuel consumption, aligning with environmental standards. This initiative supports the growth of the shipbuilding industry in Louisiana and demonstrates Woodside's commitment to sustainable and efficient LNG operations.
What's Next?
Construction of the tugboats is set to begin in the second quarter of 2026. The vessels will be built according to advanced design specifications to meet modern LNG terminal operations' safety and environmental requirements. As the project progresses, Woodside aims to achieve its first LNG production by 2029, with the tugboats playing a crucial role in ensuring safe and reliable LNG supply to global customers. The project is also designed for future expansion, potentially increasing its capacity and further contributing to the local economy.
