A community garden project in Fort Pierce, Florida, led by Bernie McBee and supported by the First Church parish, has successfully produced 4,500 pounds of produce this year. The initiative, named 'Harvesting Hope & Seeding Solutions,' aims to address
food insecurity in an economically disadvantaged area classified as a food desert. The garden serves various community groups, including senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and unhoused individuals. The project is entirely volunteer-driven, with 47 volunteers contributing over 4,500 hours in the past year. The garden employs sustainable agricultural practices, such as biological pest control and composting, and features a solar and battery storage system that contributes electricity back to the city.
