What's Happening?
Kia has introduced the 2027 Kia Seltos and Seltos HEV, along with the all-electric 2027 Kia EV3, at the 2026 New York Auto Show. The EV3, which debuted in 2023 and was initially available in Europe and South Korea, is now set to enter the U.S. market.
It features a 400-volt electric vehicle architecture and offers configurations with either a single motor or dual-motor setup, providing a range of 220 to 320 miles. The Seltos, available in both combustion and hybrid variants, has been updated with increased cargo space and improved legroom. The Seltos HEV introduces a hybrid powertrain with a 1.6-liter engine and a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. Both models are equipped with advanced infotainment systems and driver assistance technologies.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of these models reflects Kia's strategy to cater to a diverse range of consumer preferences, from traditional combustion engines to hybrid and fully electric vehicles. This move is significant as it comes at a time when many automakers are discontinuing affordable models, particularly in the EV segment. By offering a variety of powertrains, Kia aims to capture a broader market share and provide consumers with more choices in the affordable SUV category. The EV3's compatibility with Tesla's Supercharger network and its competitive pricing are likely to enhance its appeal in the U.S. market.
What's Next?
The combustion-powered Seltos is expected to go on sale in the second quarter of 2026, with the Seltos HEV following in the fourth quarter. The EV3 is anticipated to arrive in the U.S. by late 2026. As these models become available, Kia will likely release more detailed pricing and fuel economy information. The market's response to these new offerings will be crucial in determining Kia's future strategies in the competitive SUV and EV markets.
