What's Happening?
Zelim has announced that its AI-enabled ZOE man-overboard detection (MOB) system has received official ISO 21195:2020 certification from Lloyd’s Register. This certification follows extensive sea trials on the Ambition vessel, managed by Ambassador Cruise
Line, marking the first time ISO testing has been completed on a cruise vessel. The ZOE system achieved a 97% detection rate during simulated man-overboard tests, surpassing the ISO’s minimum requirements. The system is designed to provide 360-degree surveillance using advanced computer vision and video analytics, trained on a proprietary maritime dataset of over 9.5 million annotated objects. This development positions ZOE as a pioneering solution to the cruise industry’s long-standing challenge of ensuring passenger safety.
Why It's Important?
The certification of the ZOE system is a significant advancement for the cruise industry, offering a reliable solution to meet the requirements outlined in The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 (CVSSA). The system's ability to detect both adults and children enhances safety measures on passenger ships. With a false alarm rate significantly lower than the ISO minimum requirement, ZOE provides a trustworthy and efficient safety mechanism. This development could lead to widespread adoption across the cruise industry and potentially in other sectors such as defense, setting a new standard for maritime safety.
What's Next?
Following the certification, Zelim plans to focus on securing global uptake of the ZOE technology in the cruise sector and beyond. The deployment of ZOE on the Ambition vessel as the first permanently installed and certified MOB system paves the way for its adoption across the industry. As cruise lines seek to enhance safety measures, the ZOE system could become a standard feature on passenger ships worldwide, influencing future safety regulations and practices.
