What's Happening?
The 2027 London Marathon has set a new record with 1,338,544 people applying to participate via the public ballot, surpassing the previous year's record of 1,133,813. The event, scheduled for April 25, 2027, continues to be the world's most sought-after
marathon, as stated by Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events. The ballot results will be announced in July, with places allocated through a random draw. This year marks the first time over a million applications have come from the UK alone, with nearly equal male and female registrations. The marathon's popularity is further highlighted by recent historic performances, including Kenya's Sabastian Sawe running the first sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race.
Why It's Important?
The unprecedented number of applications for the London Marathon underscores the event's global significance and its role in promoting physical activity and community engagement. The marathon not only serves as a major athletic competition but also as a significant fundraising event, contributing to various charitable causes. The potential expansion of the event to two days could enhance its economic and social impact, generating over £400 million in benefits and raising more than £150 million for charities. This expansion reflects the growing demand for participation and the marathon's ability to inspire people worldwide.
What's Next?
Organizers are considering expanding the 2027 London Marathon to a two-day event, with separate days for elite women's and men's races, alongside mass participation events. This proposal aims to accommodate the high demand and maximize the event's impact. Discussions with stakeholders are ongoing, and a decision is expected by the end of May. If approved, this expansion would be a one-time occurrence, designed to enhance the marathon's reach and benefits.
