The latest ReFrame report, an initiative by Sundance Institute and WIF in partnership with IMDbPro, reveals a decline in gender-balanced hiring among the top 100 films of 2025. The report awards ReFrame Stamps to productions that meet gender equity criteria.
In 2025, only 26 films received the Stamp, a decrease from 30 in 2024. The number of women and nonbinary directors also fell from 20 in 2023 to 11 in 2025. Similarly, lead performers saw a reduction, with 39 women, including one transgender actor, represented in 2025, down from 51 in 2024. Ethnic diversity reached its lowest in eight years, with only seven women of color in lead roles. WIF CEO Kirsten Schaffer emphasized the need for intentional hiring choices to build a more equitable industry.
