What's Happening?
U Mobile, in collaboration with Qualcomm and City-Link Express, has completed a 5G IoT proof of concept (PoC) for high-value air cargo tracking. The PoC integrated U Business's ULTRA IoT connectivity solution and Qualcomm's terrestrial positioning service
into City-Link Express's logistics operations. This initiative aimed to improve shipment verification times and incident resolution through real-time tracking. Conventional methods provide limited visibility, but the new system offers continuous updates on location and conditions such as shock, tilt, temperature, and light exposure. The results showed significant improvements in shipment location verification and operational review times.
Why It's Important?
The successful implementation of 5G-IoT technology in cargo tracking represents a significant advancement in logistics management. By providing real-time visibility and objective data, the system enhances accountability and efficiency in handling high-value shipments. This technology can transform logistics operations, reducing verification times and improving dispute readiness. The increased data accuracy allows for better route optimization and capacity planning, which can lead to cost savings and improved service quality. As logistics companies adopt these technologies, they can offer more reliable and efficient services, benefiting both businesses and consumers.
What's Next?
Following the positive results of the PoC, U Mobile and Qualcomm may expand the use of 5G-IoT technology to other logistics operations. The technology's success could lead to broader adoption across the industry, prompting other companies to invest in similar solutions. As the demand for real-time tracking grows, further innovations in IoT connectivity and positioning services are expected. Stakeholders may explore partnerships to enhance logistics capabilities and address challenges in supply chain management.
