What's Happening?
AngloGold Ashanti has begun operating a Normet SmartDrive battery-electric concrete mixer at its Cuiabá gold mine in Brazil. This marks the first use of such technology in the country. The electric mixer,
designed for underground use, offers zero emissions, reduced noise, and lower heat production, enhancing air quality and operational safety. The vehicle features advanced Li-ion battery technology, fast charging, and energy recuperation capabilities. It will be tested over an 18-month period to evaluate its performance and impact on mining operations.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of battery-electric vehicles in mining operations represents a significant step towards sustainable mining practices. By reducing emissions and improving working conditions underground, AngloGold Ashanti is addressing environmental and safety concerns associated with traditional diesel-powered equipment. This move aligns with broader industry trends towards electrification and sustainability. The successful implementation of this technology could set a precedent for other mining companies, potentially leading to widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the sector, reducing the industry's carbon footprint.
