What's Happening?
DayOne Data Centers Limited has signed significant renewable energy supply agreements with TNB Renewables and TNB Power Generation in Malaysia. These agreements, under Malaysia's Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme, cover 1.5GWp of solar capacity
and 2.2GWh of battery energy storage. The deal supports DayOne's goal of achieving 100% renewable energy across its platform by 2030 and reducing emissions by 42% from its 2025 baseline. This initiative is part of DayOne's strategy to decarbonize its data center operations and aligns with Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap.
Why It's Important?
The agreements mark a crucial step in DayOne's efforts to transition to renewable energy, reflecting a growing trend among data centers to reduce their carbon footprint. By securing over 1GW of renewable energy, DayOne is not only supporting its sustainability goals but also contributing to Malaysia's energy transition efforts. This move could influence other companies to adopt similar strategies, potentially accelerating the shift towards renewable energy in the data center industry. The deal also highlights the importance of corporate partnerships in achieving large-scale sustainability objectives.
What's Next?
DayOne plans to continue expanding its renewable energy capacity in Malaysia, with ongoing investments in solar and battery storage technologies. The company is expected to further develop its hyperscale campuses in Nusajaya Tech Park and Kempas Tech Park. As DayOne progresses towards its 2030 renewable energy target, it may explore additional partnerships and investments to enhance its sustainability initiatives. The success of this project could lead to increased interest from other regions looking to implement similar renewable energy strategies.
