What's Happening?
The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) 2026 is set to commence with 32 teams, including notable March Madness snubs such as Auburn and New Mexico. The tournament will begin with first-round games on March 17 and 18, culminating in the championship game at Gainbridge
Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on April 5. The NIT provides a platform for teams that did not make it to the NCAA Tournament, offering them a chance to compete at a high level. Games will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks, with streaming available on the ESPN app and Fubo.
Why It's Important?
The NIT serves as an important opportunity for teams that narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament to showcase their skills and gain national exposure. For players, it is a chance to impress scouts and potentially improve their prospects for professional careers. The tournament also offers fans additional college basketball content, extending the excitement of the postseason. For schools, participating in the NIT can enhance their athletic programs' visibility and prestige, potentially aiding in recruitment and funding.
