What's Happening?
Maldives-based premium leisure airline Beond has signed a letter of intent with Bahrain's civil aviation regulator to explore the establishment of a Bahrain-based air operator certificate. This agreement sets a framework for long-term collaboration in airline operations, workforce development, maintenance, and innovation. Beond's CEO, Tero Taskila, emphasized the strategic importance of Bahrain's aviation legacy and its role as a regional center of excellence. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to Bahrain's GDP and create numerous jobs in the aviation and related sectors.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of a Bahrain-based airline by Beond is poised to have a substantial economic impact on the region. The projected contribution to Bahrain's
GDP is estimated to be between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion within the first five years. Additionally, the creation of over 1,200 direct high-skilled jobs and support for more than 6,000 indirect roles across various sectors highlights the potential for significant economic growth and development. This move aligns with Beond's broader strategy to expand its operations globally, including potential entry into the U.S. and Indian markets.
What's Next?
Beond plans to develop structured training programs for aviation professionals, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers, and ground staff. The proposal includes the establishment of simulators and maintenance facilities, positioning Bahrain as a hub for advanced aviation skills. The airline is also seeking additional funding to accelerate its expansion plans, which include operating 56 aircraft across multiple regions. The success of this initiative could influence other airlines to consider similar expansions, further boosting Bahrain's status as a key player in the aviation industry.
