What's Happening?
The Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) is advocating for the modernization of the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) to enhance the efficiency of cross-border cold chain logistics. The alliance emphasizes the importance of digital sanitary and
phytosanitary (SPS) certification systems, which are currently limited in interoperability. GCCA suggests several improvements, including making digital SPS systems fully interoperable, transitioning to digital pre-clearance processes, expanding mutual recognition of food safety systems, and improving coordination between customs and SPS agencies. These changes aim to reduce administrative burdens and improve the reliability of temperature-sensitive logistics.
Why It's Important?
Modernizing the USMCA is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and safety of cross-border trade in perishable goods. By enhancing digital interoperability and streamlining regulatory processes, the proposed changes could significantly reduce delays and costs associated with cold chain logistics. This would benefit industries reliant on temperature-controlled shipping, such as agriculture and pharmaceuticals, by ensuring faster and more reliable delivery of goods. Additionally, improved traceability and compliance verification could enhance food safety and consumer confidence in cross-border products.
