What's Happening?
SAG-AFTRA members have approved a new four-year contract with major studios such as Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The agreement, which received 91% approval from voting members, includes a 3% annual increase in minimum wages and a 1% increase in health
plan contributions. It also addresses the growing use of artificial intelligence in the industry, a concern for many actors. The contract stipulates that AI-generated performers should only be used if they add significant value to a production, and producers must notify the union if they plan to use AI in roles that could be filled by human actors. The deal also merges the pension plans of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which had been a point of contention among members.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is significant as it addresses the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, particularly the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs. By setting guidelines for the use of AI, the contract aims to protect human performers' roles and ensure fair compensation if their likenesses are used. The deal also strengthens the financial security of union members by increasing wages and health plan contributions. This development reflects a broader industry trend towards negotiating the integration of new technologies while safeguarding traditional roles and benefits.
What's Next?
The Directors Guild of America is currently in negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, with their contract set to expire soon. The outcome of these negotiations could further influence industry standards regarding AI and other technological advancements. Additionally, the implementation of the new SAG-AFTRA contract will be closely monitored to ensure compliance with the agreed terms, particularly concerning AI usage.
