What's Happening?
Honda North America has announced a recall of 65,135 SUVs, including the 2024 Honda Prologue and 2024 Acura ZDX, due to software defects that can cause instrument and infotainment displays to go blank. This issue, first identified in June 2024, involves
six independent software defects in the Radio Control Module (RCM) that can lead to display failures. The recall was issued in February 2026 after determining non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Affected owners will be notified starting in April 2026 to visit service centers for a software update. Honda has received 148 warranty claims but reports no injuries or deaths related to the defect.
Why It's Important?
This recall highlights ongoing challenges in the automotive industry related to software integration in modern vehicles. As cars become more reliant on digital systems, software defects can significantly impact vehicle safety and functionality. The recall affects Honda's electric vehicles built on General Motors' Ultium battery platform, underscoring the complexities of software management in EVs. This situation may influence consumer confidence in digital vehicle systems and prompt manufacturers to enhance software testing and quality assurance processes.
What's Next?
Honda will begin notifying affected vehicle owners in April 2026, advising them to visit service centers for a software update. The company will likely face scrutiny from regulatory bodies and consumers, potentially impacting its reputation and sales. This recall may also prompt other automakers to review their software systems to prevent similar issues, leading to industry-wide improvements in software reliability and safety standards.
