What's Happening?
Fox Sports has renewed its media rights agreement with The Basketball Tournament (TBT) for two more years, coinciding with TBT's revamped format. The new deal includes broadcasting 20 games across Fox, FS1, and FS2, with the championship game airing on Fox.
TBT has reduced its field from 64 to 16 teams, introducing a new format with two brackets: an Alumni Bracket featuring college alumni teams and a Vegas Bracket for non-alumni teams. The winners of each bracket will compete in a $2 million winner-take-all game. This change aims to enhance viewer engagement by focusing on historic rivalries and concentrated fanbases.
Why It's Important?
The renewed media rights deal with Fox Sports highlights TBT's continued appeal and adaptability in the competitive sports broadcasting landscape. By altering its format, TBT seeks to maintain and grow its audience, leveraging college basketball's passionate fanbases. The deal also underscores the importance of innovative tournament structures in attracting media partnerships and viewership. For Fox Sports, this agreement strengthens its summer programming lineup, offering unique content during a typically slow sports season.
