What's Happening?
Wisconsin has launched a statewide network of gravel cycling routes known as Wisconsin Gravel, aimed at connecting communities and landscapes across the state. The initiative features the Granite Belt, a premier riding region with over 1,000 miles of red
granite roads and 16 established routes. This network integrates existing rural infrastructure, such as dairy roads and logging routes, into a cohesive system that promotes tourism and supports local economies. The project is designed to attract riders from across the country, offering high-quality riding surfaces, mapped routes for all skill levels, and trailhead communities with amenities.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of Wisconsin Gravel is a strategic move to position the state as a leading destination for gravel biking, a growing segment in outdoor recreation. By organizing existing assets into a comprehensive network, Wisconsin aims to enhance its appeal to adventure-seeking tourists, thereby boosting local economies and promoting rural development. This initiative not only supports tourism but also encourages healthy lifestyles and outdoor activities. As gravel biking gains popularity, Wisconsin's efforts could set a precedent for other states looking to capitalize on their natural landscapes and infrastructure to attract outdoor enthusiasts.
What's Next?
The launch of Wisconsin Gravel coincides with expanded marketing efforts and partnerships with cycling organizations. Upcoming events tied to National Trails Day and Bike Month are expected to further promote the network. Wausau will host the Healthy Communities Summit, featuring keynotes from endurance icon Rebecca Rusch and author Carter Lavin. Additionally, Trek will host a WORS event with gravel races, and Ironbull will continue its Red Granite Grinder Races. These events aim to establish Wisconsin as a top gravel biking destination, encouraging visitors to explore, stay longer, and return.
