What's Happening?
Bubbles, the chimpanzee once owned by Michael Jackson, is living at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida. Now 43 years old, Bubbles is described as a 'sweet, sweet guy' by Patti Ragan, the sanctuary's founding director. Originally residing at Jackson's
Neverland Ranch, Bubbles was moved to the sanctuary in 2005. He now lives with a group of five other apes and is known for his playful nature, despite being camera-shy. Bubbles enjoys a diet of fruits and vegetables and engages with Velcro backpacks to store his treasures. The sanctuary continues to care for Bubbles, with financial support from Jackson's estate.
Why It's Important?
Bubbles' story highlights the ongoing care and ethical considerations surrounding exotic animals once kept as pets by celebrities. His life at the sanctuary underscores the importance of providing appropriate environments for such animals, emphasizing the role of sanctuaries in offering a natural and social habitat. This case also reflects broader discussions on animal rights and the responsibilities of pet ownership, particularly concerning non-domesticated species. The continued support from Jackson's estate ensures Bubbles' well-being, setting a precedent for how estates can contribute to the care of animals associated with their legacy.
