What's Happening?
The Brooklyn Organization Dedicated to the Endurance of the Graphic Arts (BODEGA) is set to host the first Brooklyn Expo of Comics (BEC) in Williamsburg on November 14-15. This two-day event aims to spotlight comics talent from New York and beyond, featuring
over 100 artists and a series of panel discussions with industry leaders. BODEGA, a nonprofit organization, is led by Bryce Gold, former head of content at Comixology, and includes notable figures like comics writer James Tynion IV. The event will also introduce the BODEGA Comic Arts Trophy and the Brooklyn Annual of Graphically Elevated Literature, further supporting the local comics community.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of BEC marks a significant expansion of the comics and graphic arts scene in Brooklyn, providing a dedicated platform for local and international artists. This initiative not only enhances cultural offerings in the area but also supports independent creators by offering them a venue to showcase their work. The event is expected to attract a diverse audience, fostering appreciation for comics and zines and potentially boosting local businesses. By establishing a new cultural landmark, BODEGA aims to strengthen Brooklyn's position as a hub for creative industries.
What's Next?
Following the inaugural event, BODEGA plans to continue its support for the comics community through annual editions of the Brooklyn Annual of Graphically Elevated Literature and ongoing initiatives to provide resources and opportunities for creators. The success of BEC could lead to further events and collaborations, enhancing Brooklyn's cultural landscape and offering new opportunities for artists and audiences alike.
