What's Happening?
The creative team behind the award-winning series 'Soviet Jeans' has commenced production on a new period drama titled 'The Last Divorce of Communism.' Set in Latvia in 1988, the six-part series follows a couple who stage a fake divorce to navigate the USSR's
strict real-estate policies and save their apartment from nationalization. The series, created by Teodora Markova and Stanisļavs Tokalovs, will be filmed across Latvia and Lithuania, blending archival materials with new footage to authentically recreate late-Soviet Riga. The project is backed by Latvian Public Media and co-produced by Lithuanian and Bulgarian film centers, with a premiere slated for 2027.
Why It's Important?
This series highlights the socio-political climate of the late Soviet era, offering insights into the personal struggles faced by individuals under a collapsing regime. By focusing on a personal narrative set against the backdrop of significant historical change, the series has the potential to resonate with audiences interested in historical dramas and the human stories within them. The production also underscores the growing collaboration between Eastern European film industries, which could lead to increased visibility and opportunities for regional filmmakers on the international stage.
What's Next?
As production progresses, the series is expected to generate further interest at international co-production markets and film festivals. The involvement of multiple European film centers suggests potential for wide distribution across Europe and possibly beyond. The series' success could pave the way for more projects exploring similar themes, contributing to a broader understanding of Eastern European history and culture.
