Anthropic, a company known for its AI coding tool Claude Code, inadvertently exposed the tool's source code. The exposure occurred when a map file, which connects bundled code back to the original source, was included in the npm package for Claude Code.
This map file referenced an unobfuscated TypeScript source, leading to the discovery of a zip archive on Anthropic's Cloudflare R2 storage bucket. The archive contained approximately 1,900 TypeScript files with over 512,000 lines of code. Security researcher Chaofan Shou identified the exposure, and the source code was quickly disseminated via GitHub, where it was forked over 41,500 times. Anthropic acknowledged the error, attributing it to a release packaging issue rather than a security breach, and stated that no customer data or credentials were compromised.
