What's Happening?
Jane Kirby, previously the rights director at Penguin Random House UK, has been appointed as the Head of Acquisitions at the Folio Society. In her new role, Kirby will be responsible for acquiring titles
for Folio's publishing program, which specializes in collectible, hardcover reprints of classic and contemporary literature. The Folio Society, traditionally focused on the UK market, has significantly expanded its presence in the U.S. since 2000, tripling its customer base and achieving a 13% sales growth in 2025. The U.S. now accounts for nearly half of Folio's turnover, which increased by 8% to £16.8 million ($20.5 million) in 2025.
Why It's Important?
Kirby's appointment is a strategic move by the Folio Society to strengthen its foothold in the lucrative U.S. market. Her experience at Penguin Random House UK is expected to bring valuable insights and expertise to Folio's acquisition strategy. The expansion into the U.S. market reflects a growing demand for high-quality, collectible editions of literature, which could lead to increased competition among publishers in this niche segment. This development is significant for the publishing industry as it highlights the potential for growth in the market for premium literary products.
